Virtual Garden TOUR 2020 - part one
For the last 4 years we have planned a day of garden visits, focusing on gardens completed over the year and invited existing and prospective clients, garden enthusiasts and related professionals for the garden tour. Last year we visited 10 gardens in Burley in Wharfedale, Ilkley and Addingham.
Sadly we haven’t been able to have our annual garden visits day this year so we have compiled a virtual tour instead. We have included new projects, updates of gardens previously visited and a couple of videos using a drone to follow.

Our client inherited the 1970’s bungalow from his late mum who was a very keen gardener. Having refurbished the house he wanted to improve the garden which had become difficult to keep on top of as he worked in London and only came up for occasional weekends. It was important to him that any improvements were sensitive to the original garden design and planting.
The main new garden feature extended the contemporary character of the house into a large unused corner of the woodland border.
We used a light grey composite decking to wrap around a tiny wildlife pond to create a new seating area. The decking was softened with drifts of ornamental grasses – Miscanthus Morning Light and Carex testacea Prairie Fire.
In another contrasting part of the garden following selective removal of plants, we replanted the central bed between the converging paths, created a space for a proposed garden room and resurfaced and edged the path.

When we started the garden project for this new country style property in the winter of 2019, the small back garden consisted of a large pile of weedy soil. The main task was to terrace the slope. We used stone retaining walls constructed to look like dry stone walls with new stone copings and designed an integrated bench into the top corner as a main focal point.

Mediterranean Terrace in Ilkley
Our client, an interior designer wanted help to plant a large sunny south facing terrace. She had invested in large rectangular galvanised containers – a mix of white and Corten steel which were used to subdivide the space into separate zones for an outside kitchen and dining table, a causal coffee table and an area for loungers.
It is great working with another designer as it gets the creative juices flowing! We agreed on a loosely Mediterranean planting theme, echoing colours used inside for bursts of strong colours – fuchsia pink, orange and purple within a framework of structural plants and climbers for year-round greenery.
